Savukoski

Municipality of wilderness

Savukoski is the most sparsely populated municipality in Finland (0.19 inhabitants/km²), most of the people living in the southern part of the municipality. The landscape is characterised by vast wilderness areas dominated by single fells. Savukoski from the air
Different types of nature reserves make up about 1/3 of the total area. Other features typical of the local nature are vast mire areas and numerous rivers, the largest of which is the River Kemijoki that passes through the municipality. Savukoski also contains Sokli's ore body, which is located close to the border between Finland and Russia.
 

History

The municipality of Savukoski was founded under the decision of the Imperial Senate in 1916. Savukoski was settled by the Sami from prehistoric times until the 18th century. More and more Finns moved to the area, attracted by its abundant hunting and fishing opportunities, and gradually the number of Finnish settlements increased. Agriculture, forestry and reindeer husbandry are still important means of living in the municipality. Stone and Iron Age dwelling sites with the oldest iron weapons in Finland have been found in the area.

Wilderness tourism opportunities

Savukoski scenery There are good hiking, canoeing, fishing and hunting opportunities at Savukoski. You can try snowshoeing, attend a reindeer or husky safari or take a snowmobile ride in winter. The most well known fell is Korvatunturi, the home of Santa Claus, which lies on the border between Finland and Russia. You can visit Korvatunturi on a guided snowmobile safari or by hiking to Korvatunturinmurusta along a signposted route.
Savukoski is also the scene of the annual dry meat market, which is arranged on Easter Saturday, reindeer races in spring and Savottapäivä in September.
