The Sámi Education Institute

Sámi oahpahusguovddáš

The Sámi  Education Institute arranges a variety of education in Finnish and Sámi and promotes the Sámi culture throughout the Sámi Homeland.
The actual center is located in Inari main village and has branch units in Ivalo, Toivoniemi in Kaamanen and Hetta in Enontekiö.

Unique range of courses

Kuksa The Institute provides vocational education that qualifies students for work as artisans, reindeer herders, nature instructors, restaurant chefs, practical nurses and tourism service providers.

Students can also complete vocational qualifications in business and administration and business information technology.

Competence-based qualification exams are also arranged in which students can complete vocational qualifications in Sámi craft apprenticeship and reindeer husbandry or qualify as media assistants. Preparatory courses for completing the vocational qualifications of a wilderness and nature guide are available through an adult education scheme. Students can also take general studies in Sámi language and culture and media, and complete higher education courses. Teaching in the Sámi language and culture is also arranged on the web through the Learn Linc distant education system.

It is possible to complete the matriculation examination and vocational qualifications at the same time, in which case teaching is arranged in cooperation with Ivalo Upper Secondary School.

This cooperation covers the entire Sámi Homeland in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Russia. The Sámi  Education Institute also pursues cooperation with the peoples of the entire arctic area.

Beautiful arctic environment

The beautiful nature surrounding Inari offers the students and staff of the Sámi  Education Institute excellent opportunities for recreation throughout the year. Autumn is the time for hiking, fishing or picking berries, and winter for skiing on illuminated tracks or in wilderness. When spring comes, what could be better than ice-angling on Lake Inarijärvi and enjoying sunshine.
